Lake in the Woods 2

The water twinkles with a thousand stars

That dance in wavelets over sandy bars,

And disappear like mischief in serene

And peaceful covers reflecting velvet green.

By day, the farthest shore keeps watchful eye

On wavelets making nonsense, while the sky

Casts down its clear reflection, cloud by cloud,

To discipline the waves that laugh aloud.

Shadows lengthen as the night descends –

They slip into the waves and twilight ends.

Free at last of daylight’s sunny stare,

The lake sends up its silent evening prayer.
