Home!

The back porch and project central, home base and arrival spot!

Unloading Zone!

Here's where we tumble out of the car, set up work projects, park, grill, clean fish, saw wood or do the laundry (in the old days of wringers). Buildings include pump house/laundry, wood shed, ice house and more.

Gramps on the back porch

The longest hallway

From the front porch to the back porch - this hallway bisects the house and takes little feet wherever they need to go: bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, back door or upstairs! Unique acoustics and transoms over the door means no secrets!

Warmest seat in the kitchen!

This stove was a new gas/wood combination from Sears-Roebuck that was a step into modernity from the original wood stove. The smell and sounds of the wood stove are powerful memories, as is the chore of bringing in the wood – once the logs had been split into wood-stove sizes in the woodshed out back.

Ruth in kitchen

Looking from the dining room, through the pantry into the kitchen - with the back porch and shed beyond. Heart of the house.

How you've grown!

This door frame, and it's twin on the other side of the door from the kitchen into the long hall, bears the pencilled-in heights of dozens of children over seventy years. Many of us can trace our growth into adulthood in the carefully-scribed marks and notations.

A wedding!

Lee & Lizi's wedding, set in the lard overlooking the lake, was a first for the house, and also it's swan song as we all said farewell to the place. We felt the presence of all who had enjoyed Up North.

Norway pine

Iconic tree in northern wisconsin, I love the "jigsaw puzzle bark."

Oz Griggs & Gramps
Frieda Schilling

1964. Frieda had so many skills! She was a seamstress and quilter, rag rug-maker, cook, baker, crack shot, able fisher and hunter, soap-makes, kraut-maker, gardener. She told jokes and had us laughing 'til tears ran, could freeze an errant child with a look, and took joy and pride in doing her work and doing it well. She cherished friends and family and was not one to fuss or suffer fools. In her later years she stood down a bulldozer and sat with dear ones in illness – she led with her heart.

Clyde, Gran & Gramps

Among the many regulars at the lake spending time with Gran and Gramps, Clyde Ott was a favorite. I remember his as a friendly fellow who enjoyed us (little kids) and our questions, and knew marvelous things: how to make a little acorn man, or a whistle from a green stick.
